Whisker Litter-Robot 5 Pro

Whisker Litter-Robot 5 Pro: Specs, Features, Pros & Cons

Two cameras are the whole difference between the Litter-Robot 5 Pro and the standard Litter-Robot 5. One sits under the globe facing the room and learns each cat's face. The other looks down into the litter bed, so the app can show what was left behind as well as who left it. Recognizing faces is a paid feature, part of Whisker's Whisker+ membership.

The rest is shared with the cheaper model. After each visit the globe rotates, sifts clumps through a port into a lined drawer and turns past its home position to level the bed. A scale in the base weighs every cat that steps in, which is how the robot tells cats apart and tracks their weight over time. A sensor Whisker calls WasteID separates urine from stool, so the robot waits for a wet clump to set before it cycles. Pinch bars and a curtain sensor across the entrance halt the rotation when a paw or a head is in the way.

There are firm limits before any of that. Whisker sells the Pro only in the United States and says its app does not work elsewhere. It wants clumping clay litter, and translucent crystals can confuse its level and drawer sensors, so a household on pine or paper pellets would have to change litter along with the box. The globe is tall, and a cat climbs a step to reach the opening.

It makes most sense in a house with several cats of similar size, where one of them may start peeing more often and nobody can say which. With a single cat, the standard model tells nearly the same story for less.

How this VS Score was computed

Score 0: each known spec is measured against the median of all litter boxes (2 products), then weighted; 50 means level with that median. In classes of six or more, a value beyond the class’s 10th–90th percentile range counts as that limit, so one extreme product cannot set the scale. 0% of the scoreable weight could be used; unknown values, features not applicable to this class and proxies (battery capacity where a rated life exists) add or remove nothing.

Not scored: Waste drawer capacity (unknown: not scored); Days between emptying (too few comparable peers (2, need 3)); Cleaning cycle time (too few comparable peers (2, need 3)); Litter compatibility (too few comparable peers (2, need 3)); Odor control (too few comparable peers (2, need 3)); Litter leveling (too few comparable peers (2, need 3)); Safety sensors (too few comparable peers (2, need 3)); Presence detection (too few comparable peers (2, need 3)); Anti-pinch auto-stop (too few comparable peers (2, need 3)); Minimum cat weight (too few comparable peers (2, need 3)); Interior space (unknown: not scored); Entry height (too few comparable peers (2, need 3)); Max cat weight (too few comparable peers (2, need 3)); App control (too few comparable peers (2, need 3)); Health monitoring (too few comparable peers (2, need 3)); Multi-cat recognition (too few comparable peers (2, need 3)); Waste-full alert (too few comparable peers (2, need 3)); Usage log (too few comparable peers (2, need 3)); Bag-lined drawer (too few comparable peers (2, need 3)); Washable globe (too few comparable peers (2, need 3)); Noise level (unknown: not scored).

Editor’s note

I would decide on the Pro by asking one question first: will you pay for Whisker+? Without the membership the cameras give you live video capped at five minutes a day, recorded events and a week of visit history, which is a pleasant extra and little more. Face recognition and up to two years of trends belong to the subscription, and those are what turn the cameras into a health record.

The scale already does much of the identification. If your cats differ clearly in weight, SmartScale tells them apart and logs each visit and each weight with no camera involved. The Pro pulls ahead when two littermates weigh about the same, or when you want pictures of the litter bed to show a vet after a change in habits.

The inner camera is the one you may want to switch off. Whisker says its AI is trained to record pets and not people, and in the same breath that anyone in frame with the cat gets recorded. Both cameras can be turned off in the app, so the choice stays with you.

Before a trip, empty the drawer. The manual says that once the drawer-full sensor reads full on a third cycle, the robot stops cycling on its own and stops weighing cats until someone empties it. Whisker's guidance of about ten days between emptyings is for one cat, so a three-cat house away for a long weekend can come home to a stalled box.

Kittens are the other exception. Under about three pounds the manual asks for semi-automatic use, which turns the robot into a manual box for the first weeks after a new kitten arrives.

Whisker's 90-day in-home trial covers the risk nobody can measure in advance: a cautious cat that refuses the globe.

The bottom line

Who it’s for
A home with two or more cats of similar size, where the owner will pay for Whisker+ to see which cat is using the box and how often.
Who should look elsewhere
Anyone outside the United States, where Whisker neither sells it nor supports the app, and households that use pine, paper or other plant-based litter.
The trade-off that matters
The step up from the standard model buys a view of your cats, and that view becomes a dependable record of who did what only once the subscription is added.
The main alternative
Whisker Litter-Robot 4: the previous generation keeps the self-cleaning globe and the weight tracking without cameras or WasteID, for owners who want the automation and not the monitoring.
