PETKIT Purobot Max 3: Specs, Features, Pros & Cons
PETKIT's answer to the fear of a cat caught in a turning drum is partly mechanical. The gear that rotates the Purobot Max 3's cylinder is deliberately incomplete, so the drum never turns its opening fully shut. Even during a power cut, a cat can back out. Sensors sit on top of that. There are 12 of them, tracking movement and weight, and the drum stops if a cat steps in mid-cycle.
This is PETKIT's third-generation Max, an enclosed drum box with a wide, low entrance about 8 inches off the floor. The Litter-Robot 4's entry sits roughly 4 inches higher. A 360-degree leak guard that PETKIT calls ShieldBase is meant to stop leaks at the drum's edges.
PETKIT lists clumping clay, tofu and mixed litters, and the box holds two sifters, a standard one and a honeycomb one for finer grains. Long pellets won't pass either of them. For a cat that never buries anything, an app option called Smart Waste Covering has the drum cover the clump instead. Changing litter takes no tipping. A magnetic remover clips onto the sifter and one tap in the app empties the old litter, then maintenance mode turns the opening upward for the refill.
Cat recognition works by weight alone. The camera belongs to PETKIT's pricier Max Pro 2, while the Max 3 keeps a weight and visit log for each cat in the PETKIT app and sends an alert when a cat uses the box or the bin fills. The app connects over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only. PETKIT sells the Max 3 for well under what Whisker asks for a Litter-Robot 4.

How this VS Score was computed
No VS Score: only 27% of the scoreable weight could be compared like for like with all litter boxes (4 products), under the 30% a score needs. The known figures below are measured against that class median so you can see where each stands; nothing is added up or ranked.
| Specification | This product | Cohort median | Score weight | Points moved |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Days between emptying | 15 — held to half its range (fewer than six products in this class list it) | 8.5 | 0.6 | +15.0 |
| Litter compatibility | 3 | 2 | 0.4 | +10.0 |
| Entry height | 20.4 | 28.25 | 0.3 | +5.7 |
| Max cat weight | 10 | 11.3 | 0.5 | −3.0 |
| Minimum cat weight | 1.5 | 1.4 | 0.3 | −0.9 |
| Presence detection | 1 | 1 | 0.5 | +0.0 |

Editor’s note
PETKIT's product page gives two noise figures for the Max 3. The summary at the top says 35 dB, and the FAQ further down says 45 dB. A 10 dB gap is usually heard as about twice as loud, so the two numbers describe quite different machines, and we have no independent measurement to settle it. For a box in a bedroom closet, plan around the louder one.
Besides bags and litter, the Max 3 runs on two PETKIT deodorizers. The manual has you swap the N50 cartridge beside the waste bin about every 30 days. The N60, in the Breezy odor eliminator behind the side cover, lasts about 60. Both come in the box. The refill bill starts in the second month, and the woven litter pad under the sifter wears out too.
PETKIT rates the 7 L bin at up to 15 days for one cat. It gives no figure for two, and on paper a second cat halves that to about a week.
A setting called Continuous Rotation keeps the drum turning when a cat comes close instead of pausing. PETKIT offers it because a pause with the opening facing down can let a cat climb in and leave waste that leaks into the base, which is hard to clean. The cut-short gear still leaves a way out, but I would keep that setting off in a home with a young, curious cat.
The manual wants the unit on a flat, hard floor and not touching a wall, so a carpeted closet is the wrong spot for it.

The bottom line
- Who it’s for
- A one-cat home with an older or stiff-jointed cat that hesitates at a high step, already using clumping clay or tofu litter.
- Who should look elsewhere
- Homes where kittens under six months or cats over 22 lb will use it. PETKIT rules out both, and its Kitten Protection mode works by switching automatic cleaning off.
- The trade-off that matters
- With the waste bin beside the drum, the unit is about two feet wide and wider than it is deep, so measure the width of the spot as well as its depth.
- The main alternative
- Whisker Litter-Robot 4: a higher step, but it takes cats up to 25 lb and accepts silica crystal litter.
