Whisker Litter-Robot 5 Pro Review: Two Cameras, One Subscription Question

The Litter-Robot 5 Pro has two cameras, and the job they do best costs extra. Whisker's scale tells cats apart by weight, and its own help text admits the scale can confuse cats that weigh about the same. Facial recognition fixes that, and Whisker lists it among the Whisker+ membership features.

It is the top of Whisker's range, a Litter-Robot 5 with cameras added, and it sits above the Litter-Robot 4 we reviewed. Cats.com's roundup of automatic litter boxes, updated in September 2026, ranks it first and the Litter-Robot 4 second.

Nobody at this site has run one, so the assessment draws on Whisker's product pages and help text, and on reviews from Cats.com and BGR, whose writers ran it at home.

Buy it if you have two or more cats and want per-cat records you can trust, and budget for the membership. A single-cat home gets the same sifting from the cheaper Litter-Robot 5 or 4.

Quick verdict

6.7/10
Editorial ratingFairWeighted average of 4 rated sections.

Buy it for a home with two or more cats if you want each cat's visits and weight logged reliably, and plan to pay for Whisker+. Skip it for one cat, because the Litter-Robot 5 sifts the same way without cameras, and early reviews found the Pro needs more resets than the Litter-Robot 4.

Strengths

  • Sifting and odor control matched the Litter-Robot 4 in Cats.com's test
  • Fits cats up to 30 pounds
  • One-year warranty covers accidental damage

Weaknesses

  • Facial recognition, the fix for cats of similar weight, needs Whisker+, so the camera hardware you paid for only does half its job without a monthly or yearly fee
  • Weekly resets in BGR's test
  • Only two days of recordings without a membership

How we reviewed it

Basis
Research-based: assessed from the manufacturer’s published specifications, documentation and the independent sources listed at the end. We have not tested this unit ourselves; any measurement quoted belongs to the cited source.
Method

Dimensions, cat weight range, litter guidance, Wi-Fi requirements, warranty terms and the split between free and paid camera features were read from Whisker's Litter-Robot 5 Pro page and FAQ. The Whisker+ page supplied what the membership adds and how SmartScale assigns weights. Cleaning, odor control, setup and early reliability come from Cats.com's review, based on about three weeks with two cats alongside the Litter-Robot 5 and EVO, and from BGR's review, written by a long-time Litter-Robot 4 owner. Cats.com's automatic litter box roundup, updated September 2026, was used for its ranking.

Evidence

Two published reviews by writers who ran the robot at home describe the same unit in daily use and disagree on reliability: Cats.com reports performance and odor control equal to the Litter-Robot 4, while BGR had to reset the robot about once a week. Whisker's help text documents what works without a membership and where weight-based identification struggles. No lab has measured noise, odor or sifting accuracy.

Limitations

Cats.com tested before WasteID was released and without a Whisker+ membership, so facial recognition was not tested by either reviewer. BGR's review contains two statements that contradict Whisker's own specifications (a 20-pound cat limit and a need for non-clay litter). Firmware has changed since both reviews, and neither has been updated.

Two cameras, and what Whisker+ unlocks

6.5/10Fair

One camera faces out from below the globe and identifies the cat. The other looks into the globe and records the visit. Whisker says the pair use facial recognition, which learns each cat's face over time and settles after about a month of regular use.

The free tier is narrower than the hardware suggests. Without a membership you get live video for up to five minutes a day, recordings from the last two days, a seven-day view of visits and each cat's weight, according to Whisker's product FAQ and Whisker+ page. Whisker+ adds unlimited live video, thirty days of recordings, up to two years of history, anomaly detection and the facial recognition itself. Whisker bills it monthly or yearly after a 30-day free trial.

That last item can decide the purchase. SmartScale tells cats apart by weight, and Whisker's own help text says it may have trouble when cats weigh about the same, because it assigns readings from a seven-day weight history. Two littermates are the household the cameras were built for, and there the separation between them is a paid feature. Cats.com's reviewer had no membership and relied on the scale, which worked for two cats of different weights.

Whisker says its AI records pets, not people, but it also warns that you will be recorded if you are in the frame with your cat. The camera can be switched off in the app.

Sifting, WasteID and the drawer

7.5/10Good

The cleaning mechanism has not changed in principle. The globe rotates, sifts clumps through a screen and drops them into a lined drawer in the base. Cats.com found performance and odor control on a par with the Litter-Robot 4, which it has used for three years. It also noticed litter sticking to the globe wall above the flexible liner, which on this model stops a few inches above the maximum litter line.

WasteID is new. Whisker says the robot distinguishes urine from faeces, waits longer before cycling after urine so clumps can form, and cycles quickly after solid waste to contain the smell. It arrived by software after launch and learns over roughly a month. Cats.com could not test it, and no reviewer has measured whether it reduces odor.

Whisker estimates the drawer needs emptying about every ten days with one cat. It recommends clumping clay litter and warns that white or translucent crystal litter can upset the litter-level and drawer-full readings. The carbon filter and optional OdorTrap packs are meant to be replaced every two to four weeks.

Reliability and the app so far

5.5/10Mediocre

The two published reviews split here, and the split is the main risk in buying one.

BGR's reviewer, who had used a Litter-Robot 4 for years without trouble, reported motor faults and false "extended scale activity" alerts with no cat nearby, and had to reset the robot at least once a week. The app sometimes showed the robot as off while it was running, warned of low litter when there was plenty, and was slow to load the camera. Setup crashed several times before it connected. Faults that happened overnight went unnoticed until the smell gave them away. The reviewer still preferred it to scooping, but called the Litter-Robot 4 more dependable.

Cats.com's unit was easier. Setup was quicker than on the Litter-Robot 4, the firmware updated itself straight away, and the only trouble was getting the front camera to connect. Its review also collects early owner reports from Reddit and Trustpilot, from December 2025, that follow a pattern: units bricked during the first firmware update, cameras dropping offline, false drawer readings, and praise for Whisker's customer service when replacements were needed.

Whisker's warranty covers one year at no cost, including accidental damage and software support, and many bundles extend it to three years. For a first-year product with this record, that cover is worth having. Our guide to how smart litter boxes behave offline explains what keeps working when the app or Wi-Fi does not.

Size, and the cats it suits

8.0/10Excellent

Product illustration based on manufacturer imagery: Whisker's photo of the Litter-Robot 5 Pro with a cat in the entry, placed on a generated backdrop. Product illustration based on manufacturer imagery (Whisker photo)

It stands 29.9 inches tall on a 22 by 27 inch footprint and weighs 29.6 pounds empty, much the same space as the Litter-Robot 4. Whisker rates it for up to five cats between 3 and 30 pounds, with an entry 15.75 inches across and 17.5 inches of headroom inside, enough for a Maine Coon.

Kittens under the minimum weight should use it in a supervised semi-automatic mode, with the robot switched off and cycled by hand. The seven-inch step is the part to check for an older cat. Cats.com's senior cat found it hard to climb and struggled to get back out past the fence.

The robot connects over 2.4 or 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and Whisker sells and supports it in the United States only, with no app support elsewhere.

Score breakdown

Scores run from 1.0 to 10.0: 9+ exceptional, 8–8.9 excellent, 7–7.9 good, 6–6.9 fair, 5–5.9 mediocre, below 5 poor. The overall score is the weighted average of the rated sections. Unrated sections do not count.

Pros

  • Sifting and odor control matched the Litter-Robot 4 in Cats.com's test
  • Fits cats up to 30 pounds
  • One-year warranty covers accidental damage
  • Separate records for each cat when their weights differ

Cons

  • Facial recognition, the fix for cats of similar weight, needs Whisker+, so the camera hardware you paid for only does half its job without a monthly or yearly fee
  • Weekly resets in BGR's test
  • Only two days of recordings without a membership
  • The app can report the wrong status
  • High step for older cats
  • Litter clings above the shorter liner

Conclusion

The Litter-Robot 5 Pro is a Litter-Robot 5 with cameras, and the cameras earn their place in one situation: several cats whose weights are too close for the scale to separate. In that home the facial recognition is the reason to buy it, and Whisker charges a membership for it.

Everywhere else the extras are harder to justify. The sifting matched the Litter-Robot 4 in the only long test published, and BGR's weekly resets suggest the newer software still needs work. A single-cat household gets the same cleaning from the Litter-Robot 5 or 4. If you buy the Pro, take a bundle with the three-year warranty and use the 30-day Whisker+ trial to judge whether the camera features change how you look after your cats.

Andreea-Viviana Jitaru’s take

I'd buy this only for a house with three or more cats, or two that weigh about the same, and I'd go in expecting to pay for Whisker+ every year. For anyone else the Litter-Robot 4 at a lower price does the part that matters, which is keeping the box clean without me. Before ordering I would read the most recent owner threads, because the reliability complaints are from its first months and I'd want to know whether firmware has fixed them.

Buy it if
  • Two or more cats whose visits and weights you want logged separately
  • Owners willing to pay for Whisker+
  • Large breeds
Consider an alternative if
  • One cat
  • Two cats of nearly the same weight and no plan to subscribe, because the scale alone may mix up their records
  • An elderly cat that struggles with a high step
  • You live outside the United States

Questions readers ask

Does the Litter-Robot 5 Pro need a subscription?

No. It cleans, logs visits and weights, and streams up to five minutes of video a day without one. Whisker+ adds facial recognition, unlimited live video, 30 days of recordings and up to two years of history.

Can it tell two cats of the same weight apart?

The weight scale may struggle, according to Whisker. The cameras can identify cats by face, but that facial recognition is a Whisker+ feature.

What litter does the Litter-Robot 5 Pro use?

Whisker recommends clumping clay litter. Some crystal litters that pass through the screen work, but white or translucent crystals can confuse the litter-level and drawer-full sensors.

How big a cat can use it?

Whisker rates it for cats from 3 to 30 pounds. The entry is 15.75 inches across with 17.5 inches of headroom inside.

What is the difference between the Litter-Robot 5 and 5 Pro?

They are the same size and both have WasteID. The Pro adds two cameras for live video, recordings and camera-based cat identification.

Can I buy it outside the US?

Whisker sells and ships the Litter-Robot 5 Pro only within the United States and says the Whisker app does not support it elsewhere.

About the reviewer

Editor

Andreea edits the written side of the site: the editor's note on each product page, the category buying guides and the blog. Her brief is to say what a specification table cannot: where a product is good, where it quietly compromises, and who should walk past it. A note that reads like marketing copy, or that praises a product without naming a drawback, does not go live.

This is a research-based assessment: the reviewer compiled it from published specifications, documentation and independent measurements rather than from testing the unit.
