How Often Will You Empty the PetSafe ScoopFree SmartSpin?

PetSafe's product page says the ScoopFree SmartSpin's 6-liter waste drawer holds up to two weeks of clumps and waste. The manual that ships with it tells owners to expect to empty it about once a week for one cat, twice a week for two cats and every few days for three or more.

The SmartSpin arrived in the summer of 2024 as PetSafe's app-connected answer to Whisker's Litter-Robot, a round globe on wooden legs that turns sideways to sift, at a lower price than Whisker's boxes. PetTechScout has not used one, and no independent test is cited, so the evidence is PetSafe's product page and the manual in the box.

With two cats, the manual's schedule means a fresh bag every three or four days.

Quick verdict

PetSafe ScoopFree SmartSpin Self-Cleaning Litter Box, PAL00-17985 (US, white)
6.2/10
Editorial ratingFairWeighted average of 4 rated sections.

The SmartSpin fits a one-cat home best, because PetSafe's manual expects its drawer to fill about weekly for every cat in the house. For that cat it is a sideways-turning box whose app logs visits and weight.

Strengths

  • The globe turns sideways to sift, so the opening never closes off a cat
  • Logs every visit and the cat's weight in PetSafe's app

Weaknesses

  • A drawer change about weekly per cat, by PetSafe's manual
  • Kittens need auto clean off
  • The manual describes no sensor that pauses a cycle for a cat walking up

How we reviewed it

Basis
Research-based: assessed from the manufacturer’s published specifications, documentation and the independent sources listed at the end. We have not tested this unit ourselves; any measurement quoted belongs to the cited source.
Method

The drawer section sets PetSafe's product page against the emptying schedule in its manual, which also supplies the sensor threshold, the cleaning countdown, the error codes, the kitten rule and the cleaning limits used in the sections on litter and on cats. PetSmart's listing provided the warranty term.

Evidence

Capacities, intervals and limits are PetSafe's figures from its product page and manual. No independent test of the SmartSpin is cited.

Limitations

No lab has measured the SmartSpin's odor control, noise or the accuracy of its weight readings. PetSafe's odor claim is footnoted to odor concealment studies against traditional pans of clay litter. Long-term reliability is not yet known.

Two weeks on the page, one week in the manual

From PetSafe's user guide: lift the full waste bag out by its drawstring (1), then refill litter up to the MAX line (2). Drawing: PetSafe SmartSpin user guide, page 16

The drawer takes a drawstring bag, with a deodorizer pack clipped into its front. A light on the base and an app notification say when it is full. PetSafe's product page also calls the box ideal for multi-cat households, a claim the per-cat schedule in its manual tempers.

Read together, the two figures describe one cat with a light habit. A second cat halves the interval, and a third makes the bag a chore of every few days. Each bag change also means a deodorizer check, since PetSafe sells the packs and the liners separately once the starter supply is used.

The odor claim on the box, four times better than a traditional litter box, is footnoted to odor concealment studies against pans of clay litter.

In a multi-cat home it still counts as one box. The kidney disease guidelines published in September ask for at least two of each resource per cat, and a self-cleaning box is one of them.

Litter, the sideways spin and the weight sensor

6.4/10Fair

A weight sensor decides when a cat is inside: any change of more than 2.5 pounds lights the entry lamp, according to the manual. When the cat leaves, a three-minute countdown starts, adjustable in the app, and resets if the cat comes back. Then the globe turns 180 degrees, clean litter falls through the sifter into a reserve behind a panel, clumps drop into the drawer, and the globe rolls back to spread the litter.

The spin runs side to side, so the opening never closes off a cat. The manual describes the weight sensor for a cat inside and the cleaning button, or the app, as the ways to pause a cycle, and no sensor that watches for a cat walking up. It also lists a sleep mode that blocks cleaning during chosen hours.

On litter, the product page says any litter works, the spec table on the same page says clumping litter, and the manual warns that larger pellets such as tofu litter may not be compatible. PetSafe recommends a clumping litter for the best results. Every refill also needs Add Litter mode, a three-second press of the cleaning button, so the sensor recalibrates to the new weight. Skip it and the box needs a power cycle.

Weight and visits in PetSafe's app

The app connects to the box over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. It logs each visit and the cat's weight, sends the drawer-full alert, locks the control panel and sets the cleaning delay. The 2024 manual calls it the PetSafe SmartSpin app, while the current product page names the PetSafe Pet Companion app.

PetSafe's page mentions no subscription for the weight and usage data. The control panel still starts or pauses a cycle by hand on a day when the Wi-Fi drops.

Kittens, big cats and the 12-inch step

5.8/10Mediocre

The assembled SmartSpin in PetSafe's user guide, which says to leave it unplugged for a kitten until she is at least 2.5 pounds and 6 months old. Drawing: PetSafe SmartSpin user guide, page 12

Kittens are excluded until they weigh at least 2.5 pounds and are six months old. Until then, the manual says to leave the box unplugged, or switch off auto clean in the app, and scoop by hand, with a box or step in front of the entrance.

The floor of the entrance sits 12 inches up, and PetSafe rates the box for cats up to 25 pounds. The box contents include no step for seniors or cats with stiff joints.

The two halves of the globe arrive separate, and you join them with eight screws, using a red alignment tool and the supplied screwdriver. For a deep clean, the litter has to be poured out of the globe by hand, the sifter and the globe halves wash in warm soapy water, and the base, which holds the electronics, takes only a dry or barely damp cloth. The manual also warns against bleach, because the smell can put a cat off.

Score breakdown

Scores run from 1.0 to 10.0: 9+ exceptional, 8–8.9 excellent, 7–7.9 good, 6–6.9 fair, 5–5.9 mediocre, below 5 poor. The overall score is the weighted average of the rated sections. Unrated sections do not count.

Pros

  • The globe turns sideways to sift, so the opening never closes off a cat
  • Logs every visit and the cat's weight in PetSafe's app

Cons

  • A drawer change about weekly per cat, by PetSafe's manual
  • Kittens need auto clean off
  • The manual describes no sensor that pauses a cycle for a cat walking up
  • Tofu litter may not work
  • Eight screws hold the globe together, so it arrives as a kit

Conclusion

PetSafe built a compact globe with a sideways spin and an app that logs weight. Its drawer fills about once a week per cat by PetSafe's manual, so the bag changes set the routine. The manual describes no sensor that pauses a cycle for a cat walking up, and the litter advice on PetSafe's page contradicts itself.

Kittens stay on a plain tray until they pass the weight and age in PetSafe's instructions.

Andreea-Viviana Jitaru’s take

The SmartSpin's drawer is sized for one cat and a weekly bag change, whatever the box says. For a single cat whose weight is worth watching, I think that chore is a fair trade for never scooping again.

Best for
  • One adult cat whose weight is worth watching
  • Owners who would rather tie off a bag each week than scoop every day
  • Rooms where a round box on legs fits better than a wide hooded one
Consider an alternative if
  • Three or more cats share it
  • The cat is a kitten, or a senior that struggles with a 12-inch step
  • Tofu or another large-pellet litter is the house choice

Andreea edits the written side of the site: the editor's note on each product page, the category buying guides and the blog. Her brief is to say what a specification table cannot: where a product is good, where it quietly compromises, and who should walk past it. A note that reads like marketing copy, or that praises a product without naming a drawback, does not go live.
